Brianne Charnigo of Sinking Spring is to participate in the Lycoming College Scholars Program

The area freshman at Lycoming College is among those who have been accepted into the Lycoming Scholars Program, which is designed to meet the needs of students with superior intellectual ability.

Charnigo, a resident of Sinking Spring and graduate of Wilson High School.

Scholars are admitted to the program based on high school achievement. Scholars must complete higher-level distribution courses, as well as an Independent Project during their junior or senior year.

For the fall semester, the scholars will study Pirates and will discuss the science of pre-modern piracy, astral navigation, piracy in popular culture and film, and modern piracy, to name a few. With Peter Leeson's "The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates" serving as the primary text, guest speakers will include Captain Henry Hirschel of Amherst College on celestial navigation and Lieutenant Commander Claude Berube of the U.S. Naval Academy on modern Somali pirates.
