Lycoming College awards its first-year writing and research prize

2016 Nov 17

Jacob Maneval '19, a history major from Jersey Shore, Pa., earned the 2016 Ed Gabriel First-Year Writing and Research prize for research completed during his freshman seminar last spring. The award is given to students in any major who complete research in any field and who document their findings in a paper during their freshman year.

Maneval's paper, "Historical Trojan War," written for the first-year seminar Origins: Archaeology, Myth and Legend at the Dawn of Civilization with Robin Knauth, Ph.D., was selected from a group of papers nominated by Lycoming professors for its sophisticated research and prose style. Maneval had two other papers nominated by professors for the award.

At a campus celebration on Nov. 10, Maneval received a $100 prize, funded by Snowden Library's Beverly Joyce Smithson Glad Fund. The prize is named for biology professor emeritus Ed Gabriel, a long-standing member and chair of the Faculty Library Advisory Committee, for his commitment to his students' success.

The First-Year Writing and Research Prize was established by the Faculty Library Advisory Committee and the writing program several years ago to celebrate freshman students who have demonstrated excellence in both writing and research.
