Lycoming women's tennis earns ITA All-Academic Award

2016 Dec 13

For the third straight year and ninth time in school history, the Lycoming College women's tennis team has earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's All-Academic Team award, thanks to a school-record tying group of five Warriors that were named ITA Scholar-Athletes, the organization announced last week. Junior Sophie Herzing (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic), sophomore Kaitlin Hallabuk (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) and freshmen Brittany Lenze (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic), Kimberleigh Parroccini (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) and Alexandra Rozzi (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) each earned the Scholar-Athlete award.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the team's roster and have competed in one or more varsity matches were included in the team GPA. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

The Warriors are one of three teams in the MAC Commonwealth to earn the team academic award along with Hood College and one of 141 in Division III. Herzing earned the award for a third time, as she rose to the No. 1 singles slot and won three singles matches and five doubles matches with partner Hallabuk. Hallabuk, meanwhile, earned honorable mention all-conference honors while posting eight singles wins at the No. 2 singles slot and also earned MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week honors once during the season.

Lenze saw time in the singles lineup throughout the year, primarily at No. 5 and No. 6 while also winning four matches at No. 2 doubles with partner Parroccini, who stepped into the No. 3 singles slot as well. Rozzi also notched a 1-2 record in both singles and doubles play while filling into the lineup when needed.

The Warriors finished the year 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the MAC Commonwealth, as they won two conference matches for the first time since 2011.

The team will begin its 2016-17 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 3, when it heads to Mt. Aloysius for an 11 a.m. match.
