Nishibun named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar

2016 Jun 6

Bree Nishibun, a recent graduate with major(s) in biology from Palatine, Ill., earned recognition as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by the periodical Diverse Issues in Higher Education for their role as a soccer player.

Nishibun, who earned honorable mention all-conference honors, anchored the women's soccer team's defense as an outside back as a senior, providing one assist while starting all 18 games and leading the team with 1,614 minutes. While helping the team to its first .500 season since 2007, Nishibun guided the defense to three shutouts and six more one-goal games. She was also a member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll as a biology major.

Diverse Issues established the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Program, named for the late tennis star, in 1992 to honor outstanding undergraduate students of color. Each sports scholar must be a non-freshman who competes in an intercollegiate sport, maintains a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20, and is active on his campus or in the community.
