Sharp selected as a facilitator for Lyco College Prep

Deborah Sharp has been selected as a Lycoming College Prep facilitator to help with activities for the pre-collegiate program that brings high-achieving, first-generation rising seniors to Lycoming College to give students a hands-on introduction to the liberal arts and to college life.

During the 2-week event, Lycoming College Prep students take two non-credit courses taught by Lycoming College professors. The courses culminate in the students' participation in lively debates about current topics in world affairs, as well as chemical demonstrations for others in the Lycoming College and local community.

Other experiences include:

  • Preparing for the college search and admissions process
  • Attending hands-on art workshops
  • Learning about the "Secret Life of a History Detective"
  • Discovering the physics of roller coasters
  • Studying poetry with Dr. Darby Lewes and "Lyco Dog"
  • Participating in leadership training and outdoor education
  • Dining with Dr. Phil Sprunger, Provost and Dean of the College
  • Reflecting on "That Special You" with Dr. Brenda Alston-Mills, Lycoming College alumna and member of the College's Board of Trustees

Off-campus adventures include:

  • Kayaking the historic Susquehanna River
  • Hiking the Allegheny Mountains
  • Digging with an archeology professor at an official dig site
  • Star-gazing with a professor of astronomy and physics
  • Doing community service at West House Personal Care Home
  • Taking a tour of the Little League International Headquarters
  • Enjoying the rides at alumnus Buddy Knoebel's nationally recognized family amusement park, Knoebel's Grove
  • Enjoying a picnic at the home of Dr. Dan Miller, Vice President for Student Life
  • Celebrating at an awards ceremony and dinner with President Kent Trachte and his wife, Dr. Sharon Trachte, at the president's home
